Great review from Scandipop!

Today saw the release of the debut single and its video, from a new Swedish popstrel. It’s 18 year old Bea Trice, and ‘Get Up Again’.

It starts off quite good, so that’s nice. But then it transforms into something quite bloody great, which is even nicer. That bridge. And that chorus! And that post-chorus!!! There’s a massive emphasis on the melody. And that’s layered over an ear catching electro production that’s a pleasing shade of dark under the brightness of the tune. A trademark of the region it comes from as we all know by now, but it’s always a joy to hear it being done so well by someone who is brand new on the scene.

‘Get Up Again’ is written by Bea herself, along with Magnus Hydén who also produced the song. Both Bea and Magnus are based in Gothenburg.

Bea Trice is releasing her debut single “Get Up Again”

Today, May 15th 2014, Bea Trice is releasing her debut single “Get Up Again” which will be available on iTunes. Behind the release is the Gothenburg based Supertonic Music with Magnus Hydén as producer.

Get Up Again is written by Bea och Magnus, who together has created an electropop sound with Soul that could be described as a musical meeting between Adele och Robyn.

Beatrice Jaksch, is 18 and is in her second year of high school on a music program at Mimers Hus College, close to her hometown, Gothenburg, Sweden. Bea has a very distinguished voice and expression that is destined to attract.

Along with the single, a music video, produced by Simon Sez (ArtBySez), is released, shot in Gothenburg an early May morning, 2014.

CNEI’ve always had a soft spot for the Chuck Norris Experiment, or CNE as they are often referred to (and for the sake of my shite typing I’m more than happy to use a nice short acronym). Harking right back to their early releases, the likes of ‘Senorita (Look Out)’ and ‘Caped Crusader’ gave me the same thrills the likes of Turbonegro and Gluecifer did in their prime did. But despite their tireless live work and more splits (singles not personnel issues!) than a Chinese gymnast, fate always seem to conspire that CNE never quite reached the same level of recognition or gained the kudos they deserved. However, that might very well be about to change. Whilst their last full-lengther ‘Dead Central’ promised much but ultimately left me a little cold, a few attention grabbing, and damn good splits with the likes of Nick Oliveri, Hewhocannotbenamed and Mondo Generator gave more than a few nudges that something was brewing in Gothenburg. The recent release of their cracking live set from Rockpalast also served as a timely reminder of what the band are capable of, and so the stage was set. And then ‘Right Between The Eyes’ landed on the digital doormat…………..

 

With anticipation and a little trepidation I dropped the needle and sat back. Ah, fuck this teasing, it’s the dog’s bollocks. In the space of thirty-eight minutes this little beauty of a record had the hairs on my neck stood up like a priest’s cock at choir practise. Thirty-fucking–eight minutes of air guitaring, ass shaking, fist pumping, hollering, motherfucking rock ‘n’ roll. From the slow build of opener ‘You Are One Of Us’ segueing straight into ‘Black Leather’ it’s full steam ahead. The five Chucks are on tip-top form. As Ransom whispers the title of the opening track you can’t help being taken back to the opening of ‘Apocalypse Dudes’ all those years ago. That might seem like a grandiose statement but that is the level this record attains throughout. ‘Black Leather’ was sneaked out as a teaser on Youtube a couple of weeks ago and might have been a case of putting the best bits in the trailer of a crap film, but oh no, whilst said song has a brilliant catchy riff, infinitely sing-along lyrics and some top notch guitar work, so does every one of the ten tracks on here. ‘White Devil’ and ‘Earth Shaking’ are strutting rock ‘n’ roll mothers with the trademark CNE stop-start chorus breaks and huge driving rhythms. ‘Under The Knife’ is less frantic but ups the ante on the brooding, atmospheric stakes. Again the lead break is full-on, foot on the monitor stuff and Ransom’s Udo on crack vocals urge you to either bang your head or pump your fist, or both. ‘Eaten Alive’ is, well, fucking stunning. Firing off on twin lead breaks, the song absolutely flies out of the traps, grabbing you by the scruff of the neck and making your arse groove like fuck. ‘Gratitude’ starts off a little awkwardly and for about five seconds seems like it could go a bit wonky, but then the Crybaby kicks in and all is well, and when the lyrics proclaim mid-song that “This song is about to kick your ass” they’re not wrong.

 

Hitting the back end of the record, ‘If I Could I Would’ is probably the most restrained song on the record, with an AC/DC riff and a stadium rock sensibility this song could get some serious airplay if any radio stations exist that don’t have shit between their ears. ‘The World Burns’ gets the strutting rawk back on the menu again with another chorus that needs to be hollered drunkenly into the early hours and a series of riffs and lead breaks that will have you believing that you are the air guitar god of all time. Now at this point I have to admit that first listens made me pass off ‘Midnight Strangler’ and the closing title track as nice but filler material, but what do you know, the fuckers have grown on me like the finest STD scabs. The first being a mid-paced brooder with subtle melodies akin to those Steve Jones used to pull off many moons ago, and the closer’s fuzzed-up riffs, infectious licks and catchiness that bloke who was temporarily in The Throbs (but wouldn’t dye his hair) seems to produce at will, make them both worthy climaxes to an album full of climaxes.

 

I do believe this record could really see Sweden’s finest mofos throw down the gauntlet to the rock ‘n’ roll Kings of Norway and take a rightful place at the very top table of dirty, filthy, punked-up rock ‘n’ fucking roll. Furthermore, with a fearsome live reputation, who knows how these songs will explode on stage. Be prepared and be very excited. My soft spot has turned very hard indeed!

Chuck Norris Experiment - Right Between Your Eyes - ArtworkDer Winter, der ein Herbst war, geht zu Ende und so wie es warm wird, braucht man auch die richtige Musik. Offene Fenster bei Sonnenschein und aus den Boxen klingen… Chuck Norris Experiment! Ihr sechstes Album haben die Schweden „Right Between Your Eyes“ getauft. Der Name passt ganz gut, da das Album einem solide und stets derbe Ohrwürmer geradezu eintrichtert.
Ein wenig mehr Hintergrund: Die Band ist nicht etwa nach dem bekannten Schauspieler benannt, dem nachgesagt wird, er könne Drehtüren zuschlagen und hätte schon mehrfach bis unendlich gezählt – die Schweden beziehen ihren Bandnamen von dem Chuck Norris, der durch Blues – und nicht durch Roundhouse-Kicks – in die Geschichte eingegangen ist. Bluesig sind sie dabei wenig: Auf ihrem sechsten Album geben sie sich betont hartrockig, mitunter fast punkig und immer sehr kultig. (Vielleicht war das schon immer so? Mir war die Band vorher leider nicht geläufig…)

Wie schon angedeutet, geht die Combo recht derbe zu Werke. Das Schlagzeug ist betont einfach gehalten, Gitarren und Bass wummern sich herrlich durch die Songs, wenn sie sich nicht gerade in den feinen und fast säuselnden Melodien verlieren. Melodien sind auf „Right Between Your Eyes“ ohnehin auffällig – egal ob als Intro oder in kleineren Häppchen innerhalb von Songs. Immer wieder setzt sich der Ohrwurmcharakter der Lieder gegen die punkigen Einflüsse durch.
Und Soli können sie auch. Oft, aber immer wieder gutes Geshredde mit Abwechslung!

CNE Promo shotApropos geschmeidige Melodien und shreddige Soli: Schon das Intro „You’re One Of Us“ zeigt diese Eigenarten knüppeldick. Und ebenso knüppeldick sind dann auch die nächsten Songs, wenn mit „Black Leather“, „White Devil“ und „Earth Is Shaking Tonight“ kräftig gerumpelt wird. Die Songs verhalten sich dabei ähnlich. Aus punkig, harten Riffings erheben sich die schon angekündigten, schönen Melodiechen, die sich in groovigen Bridges wieder verlieren und zu offenen Mitbrüll-Refrains steigern.
„Under The Knife“ spielt dabei noch stärker mit den Klischees des Hard Rock Genres. Der Song startet mit mehr Schwung, aber weniger rotzig, was gerade durch die überstarken Betonungen im Riffing untermalt wird. Wirklich aufatmen, lässt einen dann der bombastischen Refrain – sehr viel Ohrwurm!
Danach wird es wieder frecher. Und kurz später steht dann mit „If I Could And Would“ die nächste Klischee-Einlage an, die der Band sehr gut steht. Das übertrieben trampelnde Riffing erinnert schon fast an die 80ger, macht aber auch im moderneren Gewand mächtig Freude.
Im Enspurt legen Chuck Norris Experiment dann noch ein kleines Balladenpäuschen ein… Zumindest kommt „Midnight Strangler“ einer Ballade auffällig nahe. Ruhiger und langsamer (klar), die Melodien noch feiner herausgearbeitet. Wirklich soft gibt sich der Songs aber trotzdem nie, auch wenn der zuckersüße Refrain es noch so sehr versucht.
Zu guter Letzt räumt der Titelsong noch mal richtig auf. Sehr punkig, aber ihrem Stil treu, zeigen die Schweden, warum man die zehn anderen Songs, so genießen konnte.

Was sie am Ende stilsicher auf dem Punkt landen lässt (mal abgesehen von den einprägsamen Melodien), sind das klare und ehrliche Mixing und insbesondere der cleane Gesang. Wohl gemerkt clean, nicht sauber oder weich!
„Right Between Your Eyes“ spielt gekonnt mit Klischee und Erwartung. Beide werden sie immer wieder erfüllt; man schmunzelt über die ein oder andere plakative Melodie und freut sich, dass man an den richtigen Stellen doch noch überrascht wird.
Was macht also den Reiz an der Platte aus? Einfach rotziger Hard Rock. Fette Sounds, geschmeidige Soli, sahnige Melodien und immer wieder Wumms. Wirkt wie ein Destillat……(Colin)
